I am a lighting junkie! Yep, addicted. I'm addicted to good light! I love to see it, love to find it, but understand that I might need to create it. One of the most important elements in capturing successful images is the understanding and correct applying good lighting. Good lighting, like good photography in general is not convenient. You will probably start carrying more equipment than you want to. That's normal. You will always need some piece of equipment that you chose not to bring with you. It's Murphy's Law. I carry a wide range of light modifiers with me. This will turn challenging light sources into successful light sources. I also have come to the understanding that good photography requires patience. Sometimes we have to wait a few minutes or longer to capture the image to the best of our ability. I need to wait for the wind to stop blowing, for the clouds to move from blocking the sun or I may need to wait for another element in the photo to come thru. I capture the strongest image that I can. I do not rely on photoshop to "fix" it. I use photoshop as a tool and not a crutch. I do my homework. I prepare for the shoot. I create ideas in my minds eye by doing some reference work. Where will the light be? What time of day is best? What am I going to try and do differently than last time I shot? Something that I never loose site of is to be sure to make my subject look their absolute best, making sure that the lighting brings out their best qualities and minimizes their flaws. Lastly, treat people as you'd like to be treated! Back to Mentors |
